"...looking up to heaven, He said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds." (Matthew 14:19)
Under the Code of Canon Law, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church is "an acolyte, or another of Christ's faithful deputed" to distribute Holy Communion in certain circumstances.
The term "extraordinary" distinguishes a person from the ordinary (normal, regular) minister of Holy Communion, namely a bishop, priest, or deacon.
When are Extraordinary Ministers Needed?
Where there are insufficient numbers of priests and deacons to distribute the Eucharist, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion can be commissioned by the Bishop to help serve the church in this capacity. Only those who distinguish themselves by their Christian life, faith, and morals can become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC).
It is a great honor and privilege to serve the parish as an EMHC. If you are interested in becoming an EMHC, please get in touch with our pastor by calling the Parish Office at 814-684-1480.
